The holiday season is here, and with it comes the annual challenge of balancing family time, festivities, and fitness. While your regular gym routine might take a temporary backseat, staying active doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Here’s how to keep moving without missing out on the holiday magic. Probably the most important key to success is setting expectations and boundaries first….
Setting Boundaries Without Drama
Let’s talk about something that makes many people uncomfortable: setting fitness boundaries with family. You might hear:
“You’re on vacation, skip the workout!”
“This is family time.”
“One more cookie won’t hurt!”
“Why are you being so strict?”
Remember, clarity is kindness. Be honest and clear with your family. Here’s a script to use as a blueprint, but make it work for you: “Taking care of my health helps me show up as my best self for all of you. This isn’t about being strict – it’s about feeling good and having more energy to enjoy our time together.”
Remember: Your health journey isn’t up for debate or committee approval.
The 20-Minute Travel Workout That Actually Works
One of my favorite strategies when visiting family or friends is surprisingly simple: a 10-minute mobility routine followed by a quick 2-mile jog. If you’re feeling particularly spicy, wrap it up with a few sets up push ups. Here’s why it’s perfect:
- It requires zero equipment
- You get to explore a new neighborhood
- It takes less time than scrolling through social media
- The mental benefits far outweigh the physical ones
Plus, there’s something magical about jogging through a new city or neighborhood during the holidays. You get to see the decorations, feel the local vibe, and start your day with a win.
The Ripple Effect
Here’s what’s fascinating: that morning movement creates a positive ripple effect throughout your day. When you start with intention and movement, you’re more likely to:
- Make better food choices at holiday gatherings
- Stay hydrated
- Feel more energetic
- Handle family stress better
- Sleep better despite being away from home
Practical Tips for Holiday Success
Morning Movement
- Do it early before the day gets away from you
- Keep it simple and enjoyable
- Use it as “me time” before family activities begin
Travel-Friendly Workouts
- YouTube mobility routines (my favorite)
- Bodyweight exercises in your room
- Walking meetings with family members
- Dancing while cooking or cleaning (One of Renee’s favorites)
Party Strategy
- Never arrive hungry (Coach Jake and Ashley pro-tip)
- Stay hydrated (alternate water with other beverages) (Ever see Coach Delaine or Coach Sarah without a water bottle? Nope)
- Focus on protein and vegetables first
- Choose treats mindfully – pick your favorites (Christmas cookies), skip the fillers (fruit cake – does anyone actually eat that?)
Mental Approach
- Aim for maintenance, not perfection
- Focus on feeling good, not looking good
- Remember: consistency beats intensity
Reality Check
Will you maintain your exact gym routine during the holidays? Probably not. Should you? Absolutely not. This time is about connection, celebration, and joy.
But movement and mindful choices don’t have to take away from any of that. In fact, they can enhance your holiday experience by:
- Giving you more energy for activities
- Helping you sleep better despite travel
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Maintaining the habits you’ve worked hard to build
What’s Really Important
The goal isn’t to maintain strict fitness and nutrition protocols during the holidays. The goal is to find ways to honor your health commitments while fully participating in the joy of the season.
Every small choice counts. A 20-minute movement session is better than none. One mindful choice at the buffet is better than no mindful choices. Progress isn’t about perfection – it’s about consistency in the face of real life.
So pack those running shoes, bookmark a few mobility videos, and remember: You can absolutely enjoy the holidays while staying true to your health goals.
