 Finding Your Fitness Fire: Real Ways to Stay Motivate

Let’s be honest – motivation isn’t a constant flame. Some days it roars; other days it flickers. If this happens to you, then guess what?  It means you’re normal.  What’s important is to problem solve and find ways to drum up motivation, when stores are low.  Here are some practical tips that have worked for us to keep that fire burning!

1. The Buddy System Works!

This is probably my favorite, because we kill two birds with one stone (apologies to Coach Jake and other bird lovers).  Humans thrive on social connection.  Our members are busy professionals without much, if any time, for grown up socialization.  The 6 am class at DSC knows this well!  And what they have learned is that every DSC workout they do is also a special time to connect with their friends.  And the science confirms this: working out with others increases consistency and results. At DSC, we see this magic daily:

– Members pushing each other through tough sets

– Friendships forming over burpees

– Accountability that turns into genuine connection

– Post-workout coffee dates becoming tradition

2. Set Goals That Excite You

Forget boring goals like “lose weight.” It’s not necessarily that those goals are bad.  But think of a behavior-based goal that can get you there and spice up your life.  For instance, join the DSC Masterclass.  By doing this, you can set a goal weight to reach, add one extra strength session per week, add lean muscle mass…. all leading to guess what?  Weight loss (when combined with healthy eating of course). Here are a few others that you might like:

– Mastering your first pull-up

3. Keep It Fresh

Boredom is motivation’s worst enemy. This is where DSC shines!  Variety of movements, programming, equipment and fun.  How do we do it?  We…

– Change our workouts daily

– Mix strength, conditioning, power, and agility

– Add playful challenges and competitions

– Incorporate seasonal themes and bumpin music

– Throw in occasional surprises

Are burpees more fun when your Coach is wearing a turkey costume?  YES!!!

4. Make It More Than Exercise

Here’s another thing we do really well and I’m proud to brag on.  Community, teamwork, charity are all DSC core values.  That’s why we love the #DSCFamily.  We are all one, working together toward health, strength and growing our community.  How do we do it?

– Monthly community events

– Team challenges- Will we die to win a bag of protein?  Heck ya we will!

– Skill workshops- Kids skills and stay tuned for our new beginner series.

– Social gatherings – You don’t want to miss out on a DSC mixer!

– Charity workouts-  The DSC community knocks it out of the park every time. Whether we are raising money for 50 legs (supplies free prosthetic limbs), our local United Way, Delta Dogs (supplying trained service dogs for our Vets), or Breast Cancer research. We support our many breast cancer survivors who work out at DSC everyday and in memory of those we have lost.  

5. Track Your Progress

This is a big motivator for me.  I love seeing numbers move!  Whether it’s a weight, rep scheme, average mile time, you name it.  Nothing motivates like seeing improvement.  Here are a couple ways we can help you achieve this.  

– Regular fitness assessments (Ask us about our InBody body composition analysis)

– Benchmark workouts: Ask about our beginners series and Master Class!

– Progress photos – the before picture is always hard, but the after is totally worth it.  Ask us to take your before and after shots.  We would be thrilled!  We love when future members can see real people getting real results.  

– Performance metrics and PR’s (personal record): Included in your DSC membership is our tracking app, TrainHeroic. Here, you can record how much you’re lifting, reps, etc. And….the DSC coaches demo every movement so you don’t have to try and figure out what a CLDL is 😉

6. Embrace the Fun

This is the glue that binds it all together.  While we achieve the best programming and coaching, we also don’t take ourselves too seriously.  We believe laughter and fitness go together.  We love…

– Theme workout days- Metcon weeks galore!  Think 80’s days and Rocky workouts

– Partner challenges- This is a great way to build community, make the workout fun and have a built in spotter.

– Friendly competitions-  “friendly” lol, it can get very heated when burpees are at stake.

– Holiday themed events- See above “Coach in a turkey costume”

– Music driven workouts-  the best playlists to get you moving

The Bottom Line

Motivation isn’t something you find once and keep forever. It ebbs and flows and takes some work to keep it going.  We like to help by building community, variety, and celebrating small wins.
