The Ancient August Secret Your Body Already Knows

AUGUST

It’s August. The days slowly get shorter, the back to school sales are starting and right now, as you read this, something remarkable is happening inside your body.

There’s a certain restlessness that comes with August and I’ve never really been able to put my finger on it. Until now. It turns out that our bodies are going through some subtle changes at this time of year. And according to researchers, it’s been happening to humans for thousands of years as summer begins its slow transition.

And today, we are gonna take a deep dive into how you can work with these changes instead of against them.

The Hidden Wisdom of Late Summer that’s embedded in our DNA.

AUGUST 1

Whether you realize it or not, all summer long, you’ve been more active without even trying. Evening walks because it stays light later, gardening, swimming, chasing kids and grandkids at the park. Your body has been building a foundation of fitness, layer by invisible layer.

Now, as August unfolds, you might notice something else. That pull to “get ready.” Maybe you’re already thinking about fall schedules, holiday preparations, or simply feeling that back-to-school energy in the air – even if your school days are decades behind you.

And it’s not random. It’s your body’s ancient wisdom speaking.

Why Our Bodies Crave Strength Right Now

Here’s what the research tells us about the transition we feel in August:

When you’ve been active through summer (even just moderately), your cardiovascular system becomes remarkably efficient. Your body literally gets better at cooling itself, at delivering oxygen to your muscles, AND at handling physical stress. Tricked you – You’ve been training without realizing it!

As the days begin to shorten, your body starts preparing for the months ahead. Not by slowing down – but by wanting to build reserves. Strength reserves. Energy reserves. Resilience reserves.

That explains why the nagging feeling of “I should do something” hits so many of us in August. It’s not guilt. It’s instinct.

It’s time to capitalize!

Here’s what happens when you honor your natural urge to build strength in late summer:

Starting strength training now – when your body is primed for it – creates a compound effect. Every squat you do in August makes October’s energy demands easier. Every modified push-up builds the upper body strength that will carry you through holiday shopping, cooking marathons, and family gatherings.

But more than that: when you prove to yourself that you can start something new in August (when no one else is starting things), you build a different kind of strength. The kind that whispers, “I can do hard things” when life gets overwhelming.

“I’m Too Far Gone”

Yes, lol, I heard that.. Not this guy ⬆️ and not you either! You’re thinking about your shoulder that aches. Your pesky knee that complains. An achy lower back that seems to get triggered by the smallest things.

Real talk: your body’s late-summer preparation doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re 35 or 75, whether you ran marathons or haven’t exercised in years, whether you’re injury-free or managing multiple limitations – your body still wants to prepare for fall.

The difference is in how you honor that preparation. To be clear, we are not talking about punishing workouts or aggressive goals, but with intelligent movement that works with your body’s current reality.

Your August Invitation 😊

This week, I want you to try something. Instead of seeing your body’s limitations, notice its wisdom. Feel that late-summer restlessness? That’s not anxiety – it’s readiness. Notice that urge to “get prepared”? That’s not pressure – it’s possibility. I want you to focus on the path, not the obstacles.

Your body knows what it needs. It’s been preparing all summer. Now it’s inviting you to participate consciously in what it’s already doing naturally.

You don’t need to be ready. You don’t need to be strong. You don’t need to have all your ducks in a row. (Remember the blog post – “I’ll go the hospital when I’m feeling better”)

You just need to listen to what your body is already telling you: it’s time.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

Your future self – the one navigating November’s chaos with surprising energy, the one feeling strong at holiday gatherings, the one who started when starting felt impossible – is cheering you on.

Trust the wisdom of late summer. Trust the wisdom of your body. Trust yourself.
