What Does Kung Fu Panda Have to Do With Your Fitness? Everything.

kung fu 3

I had this blog written and ready to go but then last weekend I watched the original Kung Fu Panda (lol). And it was funny because the theme of the movie was exactly what I was trying to say in my blog. So, I reworked it, Kung Fu style.

Hear me out, this will come around, I promise.

There’s a moment near the end of the movie where Po’s father finally gives up the secret to the family’s famous Secret Ingredient Soup (Po had wanted to know the secret ingredient his whole life). And the big secret… was that there is no secret ingredient!

The soup is special because people decide it is. Just before this happened, Po unrolls the legendary Dragon Scroll, the one promised to hold the key to unlimited power… and it’s blank. All he finds is his own reflection looking back at him. And so when he finds out about the soup, he realizes that the power was never hidden in a scroll, or a recipe, or a secret. It was in him (and each of us) the entire time.

And so what I realized was that everything I had already written below comes down to one thing, the quiet ways we give our power away, one reasonable-sounding excuse at a time, and how to take it back.

This is a blog about getting your power back! Kung Fu style.

The first way we give it away: we decide we’re the exception

special snowflake

Every heard of a special snowflake? The “special snowflake” idea comes from Alex Hormozi, one of the sharpest teachers in the fitness space, and the first time I heard it, it stopped me cold. Here is why it stuck with me.

Twenty-three years as a critical care nurse and many years coaching has made me realize. Almost all of us, at some point, decide we are the special case, the exception to the rule. And that decision, as quiet and reasonable as it sounds in our own heads, becomes the very thing standing between us and the life we actually want.

So let’s figure out together if you are the problem. And then let’s talk about why that is the best news I could possibly give you.

The story we tell ourselves

You know the story. You may have even told it to yourself this week.

My metabolism is different. My schedule is impossible. My hip has never been the same. I’m too far gone, too out of shape, too old to start. Once the kids are older, once work calms down, once I drop the first ten pounds on my own, then I’ll walk through the door.

Here is the thing about that story. Every single line of it can be true and it can still be the thing keeping you stuck. Your hip really does hurt. Your calendar really is full. You really are caring for kids and parents at the same time, and you are exhausted.

The moment we decide our situation is too unique to be helped, we stop looking for the version of the solution that could actually work for us.

The good news: You’re normal

normal

Here’s the thing, the woman who walked in last Tuesday, terrified she couldn’t keep up, certain she was the most out of shape person who would ever set foot in a gym? She told me the exact same story you are telling yourself. So did the man before her with the bad knee. So did the one before him who hadn’t exercised in fifteen years.

Your obstacles are real. They are also remarkably ordinary. And I mean that as the kindest thing I can say to you, because it means you are not broken, you are not the exception, and you are not beyond help. You are simply a human being doing the same thing every other human being does. You are protecting yourself from disappointment by deciding in advance that it can’t work.

And it’s not a character flaw, it’s just fear wearing a very convincing costume.

The top six

These are the challenges that I hear most. Give them a scan and see if any of them sound like the voice in your head.

“I don’t have enough time.” We all have the exact same 24 hours as every single person who somehow makes it work. The busiest, most accomplished person you can think of was handed the identical number of hours this morning that you were. Time is rarely the real issue. Where you rank on your own list is. And right now, you’re probably putting yourself last.

“I’m not a gym person.” Of course you’re not. Not yet. A pianist isn’t a pianist until she sits down and plays her first notes. You weren’t a shoe-tier until someone showed you the loops and you fumbled through it a hundred times. Nobody is born a gym person. You become one the moment you walk in and try, and then keep showing up. Identity follows action, never the other way around.

“It’s too expensive.” I understand, and I will never pretend premium coaching is cheap, because our coaches are the best in the business and we pay them like it. But ask yourself what the alternative costs. The doctor’s visits, the medications, the lost years, the version of you who never got strong, the stress and low confidence. Your health is the one investment that pays you back every single day you’re alive.

“I can’t do nutrition because I travel too much.” The people who travel the most are exactly the ones who need a flexible system the most. We don’t coach you for some imaginary perfect week where you’re home with a meal-prepped fridge and nothing on the calendar. We coach you for your actual life. The airports, the hotel rooms, the client dinners. Travel isn’t the reason it can’t work. It’s the reason you need us.

“My body is too beaten up.” This might be the one that really gets to me, because it is exactly backwards. A body that’s been through it is not a reason to stop strength training. It is the single most important reason to start. When you stop loading your muscles and joints, they do not get safer. They get weaker, stiffer, and more fragile, and the very thing you were trying to protect breaks down faster. Strength is what rebuilds a beaten-up body. And done with us, it’s loaded carefully, modified intelligently, and built around your injuries. Doing nothing is the single worst decision you could make for a body that already hurts.

“I’ll go to the gym when I get in shape.” Friend, do you go to the hospital when you’re well? You come to us to get in shape. That is the entire point. Waiting until you’re already fit to walk in is like waiting until you’re already healthy to see a doctor.

are you lookin at me?

mirror

One of the hardest things in the world is to stand in front of a mirror and take an honest look. And I’m not talking about looking at your physical body. I’m talking about your choices and what you tell yourself. Do me a favor, scan through these and if you find yourself nodding, it doesn’t mean you’re a terrible person. It just means you are just standing in your own way, and that is totally fixable!

  • Are you waiting to feel ready, motivated, or “less embarrassed” before you start?
  • Do you tell yourself you’ll begin when life calms down, even though life has not calmed down once in the last decade?
  • Are you comparing your day one to someone else’s day one thousand?
  • Do you let one missed workout become a missed week, and a missed week become a missed season?
  • Are you using your injury as a reason to do nothing, instead of a reason to do something smarter?
  • Do you put yourself dead last on a list that never ends, and call it being responsible?

If those landed, don’t worry because this is the moment everything can change.

Back to Po and the blank Dragon scroll

Remember Po and the empty Dragon Scroll? This is your version of that moment.

There is no secret ingredient to getting strong, getting healthy, getting your life back. No magic program, no perfect Monday, no hidden trick that the fit people know and you don’t. If you are the problem, then you are also the solution. It’s just never going to be easy and it’s never going to come without a sacrifice.

When we blame our metabolism, our schedule, our age, or our past, we hand all of our power to the things we cannot control. But when you take ownership, you take your power back. The obstacle stops being a wall and becomes a starting line. You stop waiting to be rescued and start being the person who shows up.

This is not about willpower, and it is not about shame. Shame has never once helped anyone get stronger. It is about radical, loving honesty with yourself, the kind that says: this is on me, which means this is within my reach.

Action drives mood

If you’re waiting for it to be easy or to be cheap, or for the motivation to finally show up… how’s that planet fitness membership working out? No shade on Planet Fitness, I have a membership there and it comes in handy.

Motivation doesn’t come first. Action comes first, and motivation follows. Mood always follows action, not the other way around. You don’t wait until you feel like it and then move. You move, and the feeling catches up to you.

So you don’t feel like it today? It feels too hard? That is exactly the moment to do it. The discomfort you’re feeling isn’t a stop sign. It’s the green flag!

Life will always be busy. Spoiler alert, it doesn’t get calmer as the years go on, it gets fuller. So wouldn’t you rather start now, while you have the support around you, and build the habit before life gets even busier?

Start now, with us in your corner, and when the next wave comes, the habit holds. It sticks. You’ll already be someone who trains through the busy seasons instead of disappearing in them.

Po got beat up, and loved every second of it

IMG 6645

Here is the other thing from that movie that I just love!

When Po finally starts training, he gets absolutely wrecked. The masters throw everything at him. He gets kicked, hit, knocked flat, over and over. And he is thrilled. Not because it doesn’t hurt, but because he understands that every single hit is the lesson. He keeps getting up, grinning, hungry for the next round.

It’s a choice, right?

Two people can live the exact same hard day. The bad knee, the rough number on the scale, the workout that humbled them. One walks away thinking, this is happening to me, why does it always go this way. The other walks away thinking, this is happening for me, this is the rep that makes me stronger. Same event, completely different outlook.

Your setbacks are not proof that you should quit. They are the training! The sore muscles, the modified movement, the morning you showed up tired and did it anyway, that is not the obstacle standing between you and getting strong. That is the getting strong.

So the next time life takes a swing at you, you get to decide what it means. You can let it knock you down and keep you there, or you can get up like Po, a little wiser, a little tougher, and weirdly grateful for the lesson.

you actually are a special snowflake!

Here is the twist. While your excuses are wonderfully common, you are genuinely one of a kind, and that is exactly how we treat you.

We are not a place that hands you a one-size-fits-all program and tells you to keep up or get out. We know your injury status. We know your limitations. We know your history. Every program comes with safe modifications built in, and our philosophy is never to make it “easier.” It is to make it safer, protecting your injury while still working the exact muscle group we programmed, unless your body truly tells us otherwise.

Whether it’s a nagging shoulder, cranky hip, or something you’re embarrassed to mention? It is not a reason we can’t help you. It is the literal reason we exist. We have purposely built a safe space where authenticity, quality, kindness, safety, inclusion, and value are not words on a wall. They are how we coach you, every single day.

my challenge to you

You deserve to be seen, supported, and coached as the individual you are.

You don’t have to be ready. You don’t have to be fit first. You don’t have to have it figured out. You just have to be willing to stop telling yourself you’re the one person this won’t work for.

Because you’re not. And we’ll prove it to you.

P.S. Take us up on a free 7-day trial. No pressure, no judgment, just a week to see what it feels like to walk into a place that already knows exactly how to take care of you. Your only job is to show up. We’ve got the rest. Click HERE to get started!
