The One Gym You Should Never Be Afraid to Walk Into

welcome to dsc

Walking through a gym door is the scariest step there is. At DSC, we know that, and we built the whole first visit around it.

I usually write one blog a week, but I’m writing this one today because of a No Sweat Intro I had yesterday. She reminded me how hard it can be to walk through our front door, and I wanted to write about it while it was still fresh. So this one is plain. There aren’t a lot of pictures. It was just top of mind.

The scariest step you will take with us is not the first workout. It’s the door.

I know that because I’ve heard it from nearly everyone who comes in for their No Sweat Intro, and because the research says the same thing. In a 2025 survey of more than 1,000 American adults, over 40 percent said they avoid working out because of gym anxiety, and the top reason was fear of being judged for how they look or how fit they are (Flex, 2025). If that’s you, you’re not weak, and you’re not a terrible person. You’re actually normal, because you’re in the majority.

So this post is for the person who has thought about booking a No Sweat Intro three or four times and closed the tab every time. I want to walk you through exactly what happens, so there’s nothing left to imagine.

Why I care so much about getting you moving

more dsc

Before I owned DSC, I spent 23 years in nursing, working my way from the med-surg floor up through critical care at some of the major teaching hospitals in this country. I watched more physical and mental suffering than I can describe, and so much of it came from chronic disease that could have been slowed or prevented by moving more.

That isn’t just my observation. The World Health Organization estimates that between 2020 and 2030, almost 500 million people will develop heart disease, diabetes, obesity or other preventable conditions attributable to physical inactivity (WHO, 2022). Those are people’s parents. Those are people in their forties and fifties who kept meaning to start.

And it’s personal. I live with depression and anxiety, and movement is the most effective tool I have against both. Strength training is a big part of what’s kept me alive. The science backs that up: a 2024 review of 218 randomized trials in The BMJ found that exercise, including strength training, meaningfully reduces depression, with bigger benefits the harder people worked (Noetel et al., BMJ, 2024).

That’s why I will do anything to get anybody moving. Anybody. And it’s why DSC is built for people who have never done strength training before, or who haven’t in a very long time.

What we do before you even arrive

The morning of your appointment, you’ll get a selfie from the person you’re meeting with, which most often is me. It’s a small thing, but it changes the whole experience. When you walk in, you already know the face that’s going to greet you, and you already know it’s a friendly one. You won’t be walking into a room full of strangers. You’ll already know somebody.

What happens when you walk in

You’ll be welcomed the way we welcome everyone at DSC, warmly, with enthusiasm, with kindness, and by your name. That isn’t a script we train people on. We’re glad you came, and you’ll feel that within the first ten seconds.

What a No Sweat Intro actually is

A No Sweat Intro is free, and it’s a conversation and a tour, not a test. You won’t be measured. You won’t be asked to prove anything.

There’s no clock on it either. If you need it to be brief, we’ll work around your schedule, but I’d rather not put a time limit on it, because the more I learn about you, the better we can take care of you. I want to hear where you are right now, what’s been holding you back, what’s nagging or hurting, what your days look like, and what you’d like life to feel like. I also want you to leave with every question answered. So it takes as long as it takes.

Then we’ll show you what we do and how we do it.

Nobody here is watching you

The culture at DSC is inclusion and support and we work hard at it. We’re not about who’s strongest, who is the fastest. Every member at DSC is busy trying to survive a full life, stay as healthy as they can, and do the best they can with the day they’ve got. Most of our members are in the middle of it all, balancing careers, kids, and often aging parents too.

The ironic thing about feeling watched is when you walk into a gym worried that everyone is looking at you, you’re thinking about yourself, how you look, how you’re moving, whether you’re doing it right. What you don’t realize is that everyone else in the room is doing the exact same thing! They’re focused on themselves, their own movement, their own hour. Psychologists call this the spotlight effect, and the research shows we consistently overestimate how much other people notice us (Gilovich, Medvec & Savitsky, 2000). If a class happens to be running when you visit, watch the room for a minute and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Our culture didn’t happen by accident. We work at it, every day, in how our coaches talk to people and in how members treat each other. And there’s good evidence it matters: a 2026 systematic review of adult group fitness classes found that feeling connected to the group and having coaches who create a supportive climate were among the strongest predictors of whether people kept showing up (Behavioral Sciences, 2026).

What if I have an injury or can’t keep up?

Keeping up isn’t a thing at DSC. There’s no pace to match and no one to match it to. Our coaches know every member’s injury history and limitations, and every program comes with safe modifications ready to go. Our philosophy on modifications isn’t “easier.” It’s safer for your injury while still working the same muscle group we programmed, unless your injury or limitation rules that out. If you’re managing something specific, we’ll ask you to keep your provider in the loop, and we’ll work within whatever they’ve told you.

Bring a friend who’s been on the fence too

people you love

Here’s a trick I talk about all the time: bring a friend. Even if they have no interest in joining and they’re only there for moral support, bring them. Walking in next to someone you know makes the door a lot less heavy.

And if you both end up training, the odds are on your side. The Community Preventive Services Task Force reviewed social support programs like buddy systems and found strong evidence that they work, with a median 44 percent increase in time spent being physically active (The Community Guide). Exercise plus friends is one of the best tools there is.

The only thing you have to do

You don’t have to be in shape to get started. You don’t have to have it figured out. You don’t have to keep up with anyone.

You just have to come see it.

How long does it take? As long as you need. There’s no set time limit, and if your schedule is tight, we’ll work around it.

Do I need to be in shape or have experience? No. DSC is built for people who have never strength trained before or haven’t in a long time. Most of our members started exactly where you are.

What if I have an injury? Tell us. Our coaches know every member’s injury status and always have safe modifications ready. We’ll also ask you to keep your provider in the loop.
